Animal Care Specialist Military Career 68T

Animal Care Specialist Military Career 68TAnimal Care Specialist Military Career 68TAnimal care specialists (68T) are U.S. Army soldiers who work in the animal health field. These health care professionals assist with basic care and veterinary treatment for government animals. Duties Animal care specialists (68T) are U.S. Army soldiers who provide care for government-owned animals such as dogs, horses, marine mammals, and a variety of laboratory research animals. They also work to minimize the occurrence of disease in the animal populations which they are responsible for, ensuring that sick animals are quarantined and that healthy animalsare properly vaccinated. The duties of an animal care specialist usually match up closely with those of civilian veterinary technicians. Typical responsibilities include assisting veterinarians with surgeries, providing emergency treatment and management of traumatic injuries, helping to restrain animals safely, administering medications and flui ds, taking radiographs, cleaning and sterilizing equipment, taking bodily fluid samples, updating patient records, and running lab tests. Individuals working in a lab environment may be responsible for additional duties such as monitoring animal behavior, dietary intake, or physiological qualities such as weight gain or growth. They may also be responsible for collecting data, compiling and analyzing results, writing reports, and supervising any specialized care required for an experiments successful completion. Career Options Animal care specialists can work in either a veterinary clinic setting or a research lab while in the military. While these areas are usually located on a military base, it is also possible for animal care specialists to work in a mobile unit in the field when necessary. Those who pursue this career path while in the Army can go on to become certified as a veterinary technician or lab animal technician when they leave the military. The skills learned as an animal care specialist are readily transferable to a wide variety of animal careers, particularly those connected with the animal health field. Animal care specialists may also qualify for special education funding from Army programs if they decide to pursue a degree after serving in the military. Education Training Animal care technicians must complete 10 weeks of basic combat training and 11 weeks of advanced training in animal care. They must also have an Armed Services Vocational Aptitude Battery (ASVAB) test score of 91 (with a 15 in Skilled Technical). Individuals who have prior work experience as veterinary technicians or who have completed coursework in areas such as animal science, zoology, or biology will be especially well suited to this position. A good working knowledge of animal behavior and care will also be valuable to candidates seeking a position in this field. Salary The Army compensation package includes a combination of basic salary, housing, medical i nsurance, food allowances, paid vacation, special tax breaks, and more. Basic pay scales are available on U.S. military recruitment websites and through recruiter offices. The salary paid to animal care specialists is considered to be comparable to that which is paid to those working in related civilian roles such as veterinary technicians, lab technicians, or nonfarm animal care workers. The zentralwert wage for veterinary technicians, a similar career path, was approximately $29,710 per year according to the 2010 Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) salary survey. Earnings reported in the BLS salary survey ranged from less than $20,500 per year ($9.85 per hour) for the bottom ten percent of technicians to more than $44,030 per year ($21.17 per hour) for the top ten percent of technicians. The median wage for lab animal technicians, another similar career path, was approximately $22,040 per year according to the 2010 Bureau of Labor Statistics salary survey. Earnings for this position ranged from less than $16,490 per year for the bottom ten percent of technicians to more than $33,780 per year for the top ten percent of technicians. Career Outlook In a 2012 publication, the Bureau of Labor Statistics projected that veterinary technician positions would grow at a very strong rate of 52 percent over the decade from 2010 to 2020. Nonfarm animal caretaker positions are also expected to show a strong rate of growth at approximately 24 percent over the same period, much faster than the average for all careers. The animal health industry is expected to continue to show rapid growth for the foreseeable future, and prospects should be good for those with the skills and training to pursue this type of work. While there is strong interest in this sort of position with the military, prospects should be good for those who already have a background in animal health care before entering the service.

Keep Your Job

Keep Your JobKeep Your JobThere are risks to checking out of your job prematurely. There are even rewards for overperforming during uncertain times.Have you ever leidiced how many people, when faced with the possibility of a layoff or reduction in force (RIF), start acting as if its a foregone conclusion?Every chance they get, they search through online postings, network with people they havent talked to in years and actively look for a new standort. In other words, they behave as if they are going to lose their jobs. Why preparing for the worst is not the best strategyTo many people, the prepare-for-the-worst approach is a valid way to deal with the uncertainty of a layoff. Even Dale Carnegie, in his book How to Stop Worrying and Start Living, talks about a strategy in which people accept the worst that can possibly happen as a way to eliminate worry. In certain circumstances, this approach makes sense. A potential layoff is not one of those times. That may seem like an extreme stance , so let me explain. I am not saying you should shut your eyes, ignore the facts and hope the nightmare stops before your paycheck does. Instead, I firmly support having a contingency plan for any given circumstance. But the issue in this case is not about planning its about focus.Henry Ford once said, Whether you think you can or think you cant, youre right.Had he been talking about the likelihood of having your job eliminated in a RIF, Ford might have said, Whether you think you will or you think you wont, youre right. One could argue that Fords thinking wouldnt apply to a potential layoff because you wouldnt seem to be the one in control. I disagree. You have a lot more power than you realize. That doesnt mean you can always think your way into saving your job. But it does mean you have to be careful how you think. You also have to be conscious of the behaviors you adopt as a result. In essence, what Ford was talking about is The Law of Attraction. The Law of Attraction states that whatever you give attention, energy, and focus to will become part of your reality. Ford talked about thoughts, but he was really talking about beliefs. Your mind is a lot more powerful than you might imagine. If you truly believe something is possible, your mind will find a way to make it happen. Conversely, if you dont believe in your heart in a particular possibility, you arent likely to play any role in making that a reality.Taking this one step further, it isnt hard to imagine how giving attention, energy and focus to the possibility of losing your job might eventually detract from your performance. At the very least, you cant think about two things at once. You cant think about losing your job and focus on doing the best job possible. You have to pick one.Applying this to a potential layoff, ask yourself this questionHow might your behavior be different if you knew with 100% certainty your job would not be eliminated? How would you focus the time and energy you are now spendin g in your job search to improve your performance in your current position? If you find yourself worrying about the future and complaining about the way the company is handling the situation, what would be a more constructive way to channel that attention and energy? How might your relationships with your co-workers be different if you didnt feel you were somehow competing with them in a game of corporate musical chairs?Take a few minutes to reflect on these questions. With minimal effort, you will quickly realize how many opportunities you may be missing. This is the time to take action. And remember to weigh the risks of checking out of your job prematurely With the number of companies affected by recession, any opportunity in your same industry may simply be trading one set of issues for another. Whatever the case, be sure you are running toward a legitimate opportunity. If you do decide to take another position, be aware that you may find yourself in the unenviable position of being the last person hired before your new company has to make its own difficult decisions. So, when you evaluate other opportunities, remember There is probably no different from here.In short, start acting like and believing your job is safe. Even if you dont see the possibility in this right now, suspend disbelief and give it a shot. You have absolutely nothing to lose. Dont dedicate your attention, energy and focus to worry, uncertainty and frustration. Instead, find ways to demonstrate those valuable qualities for which the company probably hired you in the first place.

How to Get Your Groove Back

How to Get Your Groove BackHow to Get Your Groove BackToo many of us are hung up on what we dont have, cant have, or wont ever have. We spend too much energy being down when we could use that same energy - if not less of it - doing, or at least trying to do, some of the things we really want to do. Terry McMillan In the popular book by Terry McMillan, How Stella Got Her Groove Back, the main character has a hard time staying in the moment and her mind is always racing to the things she needs to do, should be doing, or wants to be doing. She laments she is tired of running, tired of jumping. One description of the movie summarizes both the main plot and describes groove in this way Stella takes personal inventory of her life to try to find a balance between her desire for love and companionship, and the responsibilities of mother and corporate executive. Venise Wagner, San Francisco Examiner Losing your groove generally refers to losing your focus, drive, passion, or ability to get th e things done that give you pleasure or a sense of meaningful purpose in life. Examples include You are still interested in your partner, but lifes distractions keep you from making time for themYou still enjoy hobbies but push them aside for other thingsYour focus or edge seems to have softened and you pursue things that bring you pleasure less passionately. In short, getting your groove back means putting the pleasure back into a duty-driven life. Some might say getting your groove back is just a more poetic way of referring to ?work-life balance. How to Determine If You Are Depressed, or If Youve Just Lost Your Groove One key difference between simply losing your groove and suffering from depression is the degree of your symptoms. If your symptoms keep you from doing the things you want to in life or have caused you to lose desire, or the ability to experience pleasure or joy, you may be suffering from depression. For example, if you are unable to get out of bed in the mornin g because you are so tired or overwhelmed by life, it could be a sign of depression. Feeling like you are not getting all out of life that you want can be a depressing thought you may be frustrated that there are not enough hours in the day, or you feel bound to duty and obligations first, but it does not necessarily mean you are suffering from depression. If you simply have lost focus, or your life is so cluttered with daily grind items that you cannot seem to get a grip on things, you may just need a new plan for organization, a better support system, or even a life coach. Although a life out of control can be a sign of depression, it can also be a sign your life is just chaotic and disorganized. flaute often feels overwhelming and is associated with I cant... and can lead to intense negative emotions and feelings of guilt or of being powerless. Depression may be triggered by outside events (such as change or loss), an illness, or even hormone imbalances, but it is the forces insi de your heart and mind that prevent you from doing or enjoying things in life. Losing your groove is more along the lines of wanting to get something done, but lacking the motivation, time, or focus. The distractions, forces and pressures of life are the major culprits for not putting your needs first you have not necessarily lost your desire to do certain things, you just feel compelled do other things instead.

This map shows the highest-paying companies in every state

This map shows the highest-paying companies in every stateThis map shows the highest-paying companies in every stateEverybody assumes that CEOs make the most money, but it turns out that getting into the C-Suite isnt the only way to earn a giant paycheck. Publicly traded companies are now required to release pay figures for their average workers, and some are indeed paying big bucks to the Average Joe. Our new map breaks down the highest-paying companies by industry in every state.Companies now have to disclose key data about employee compensation thanks to a new rule from the SEC. One of the organizations paying close attention to these disclosures is the AFL-CIO, where we found the data for our map. Theyve used the data to point out the discrepancy in the pay received by CEOs versus that received by production and nonsupervisory workers, but we wanted to take a look at where those in the latter group are also making out well. First, we identified the companies in each state that pa y the highest salaries to their average workers. Then we color-coded our map by industry and overlaid the top companys logo and its average workers salary for easy reference.Top 10 highest-paying companies1. New Jersey NRG Yield, $964,005 (energy)2. Nevada VirnetX Holding Corp, $562,062 (technology)3. California Geron Corporation, $500,250 (health)4. Massachusetts Infinity Pharmaceuticals, $495,513 (health)5. Virginia Arlington Asset Investment Corp, $483,502 (financial)6. Michigan Esperion Therapeutics, $409,294 (health)7. New York Intra-Cellular Therapies, $354,916 (health)8. Maryland Chesapeake Lodging Trust, $347,750 (real estate)9. Texas Capstead Mortgage Corporation, $300,000 (real estate)10. Utah Lipocine, $299,612 (health)Our approach to mapping the best companies for average compensation reveals several key insights about the American economy. For one, you can landsee which professions tend to pay the most in different parts of the country. For example, there are two obviou s clusters of yellow states across the Northern Plains and the Deep South - these states have several energy companies with extremely high-paying salaries. The same can be said about health companies (like pharmaceutical and insurance companies) across the countrys midsection. Our map also highlights a few surprises. For instance, a bank is the highest paying employer in both Alaska and Montana, not an energy company as one might initially expect. And in California, a health company called Geron pays its average employees better than any of the Silicon Valley giants. But keep in mind there are significant differences between the companies on our map. At the high-end, NRG Yield average pay is $964k, and on the low-end, Union Bankshares from Vermont pays only $39,346. One reason for these discrepancies and surprises could be that, since its a new rule, companies are still releasing their figures our data might change. There are a few other important caveats to keep in mind when looking at our map. The underlying data only concern publicly traded companies headquartered in each state. For example, Alaska is certainly home to several highly-paid oil engineers, but they work for multinational companies headquartered elsewhere. Also, bear in mind that not very many people work for these companies. On average, the top ten companies listed above only employ 21 people each (that data wasnt available for NRG Yield). In other words, these are extraordinarily hard jobs to find. Nevertheless, if you see a job opening for one of these companies where you live, you might as well submit an application.Data Table 1.1Thisarticlefirst appeared onHowMuch.

Blockchain, Bitcoin, cryptocurrency and all the things we think we know, but are probably faking

Blockchain, Bitcoin, cryptocurrency and all the things we think we know, but are probably faking Blockchain, Bitcoin, cryptocurrency and all the things we think we know, but are probably faking Ethereum. Ripple. Dash. No, these aren’t the titles of dystopian novels or proposed names for future Kardashian offspring, along with Bitcoin, these are some of the forms of digital currency that fall under the umbrella term of cryptocurrency.Crypto-what? On the simplest level, cryptocurrency is “a digital asset used as money which uses cryptography to secure transactions” according to Paul Armstrong, Founder of hereforth.com. So, why are people so fascinated with the new currencies? In the early days of the internet, brands like Flooz and Beanz tried to create new payment methods that circumvented traditional dollars and cents models. The transparency propositionUnlike the money we’ve always used, cryptocurrencies aren’t controlled by big banks. So, instead of the Federal Reserve keeping an eye out (or guaranteeing things), cryptocurrency relies on the transparency proposition of something called Blockchain, which ostensibly provides the ability for anyone to monitor the ac tion without the ability for any individual to manipulate or change the process. Or, at least, that’s the premise.A short Blockchain timeline“Blockchain’s origin is somewhat steeped in mystery but it is commonly agreed that it first appeared in 2008 and was created by an individual or group that known as Satoshi Nakamoto,” Armstrong explained. (Nakamoto is also credited with creating Bitcoin). “At first, Blockchain was used to create secure transactions for Bitcoin. There are now hundreds of different types of Bitcoin available along with the original Bitcoin.“While Bitcoin receives the lion-share of coverage (due to volatile market and rising valuation), Blockchain remains the most interesting element thanks to its flexibility and potential to completely alter industries from food traceability to voting, legal contracts to copyright infringement,” Armstrong said.More about Blockchain“Blockchain technology enables decentralization,” said Amanda Gutterman, Chief Mar keting Officer at ConsenSys. “Cryptocurrencies, like Ether and Bitcoin, are securely exchanged peer-to-peer over a decentralized network of nodes. The infrastructure that maintains the transparent ledger of transactions is not subject to human manipulation and works automatically, without human intervention.”This means that individuals and groups can “establish a shared source of truth about who owns what and what transactions have been made.”And it isn’t just about currency. While the first use case of a Blockchain was with Bitcoin, which Gutterman described as “the experiment in monetary theory,” she explained that Blockchain is used with many other types of transactions that happen in a market such as: “land title and document registration, the donation and disbursement of charitable offerings, exchanges between neighbors of solar energy, and the remuneration of artists for their work directly from fans. The list goes on and on.”Armstrong believes that “Blockc hain remains the most interesting element thanks to its flexibility and potential to completely alter industries from food traceability to voting, legal contracts to copyright infringement. The foundational technology (i.e. other things can be built on top of it) is based around trust and accountability - both incredibly powerful attributes that a number of industries are looking to increase due to a variety of factors.”What about the bad guys? Some believe cryptocurrencies were originally created by shadowy types to launder monies earned through nefarious activities. Armstrong explained that “Bitcoin is an unregulated and decentralized currency which means bad people can use it to bad things easier than other methods.“Besides this issue, any money that is not going into the economy and banks, will be seen as a threat by governments and banks (although a lot are investing and exploring the technology) to investments, stocks and stability. There is also the issue of taxation to consider - while every transaction is recorded incomplete transactions are essentially invisible and although rules are being drawn up, right now there is a lot being gotten away with.”Thumbs down from BuffettDespite cryptocurrency being worth billions in trade internationally, Berkshire Hathaway CEO Warren Buffet isn’t particularly impressed with it. Buffett recently told CNBC, “In terms of cryptocurrencies, generally, I can say with almost certainty that they will come to a bad ending.” Buffet also declared the new forms of money to be “a mirage” and explained that it’s simply another way of transmitting money.Armstrong clarified that the danger of cryptocurrency is “that people lose money because of volatile markets and forces moving within those markets.”He further explained: “Due to the largely unregulated nature of the new economy and existing large Bitcoin owners (known as ‘Whales’), the Bitcoin markets remain volatile and unpredictable  although the trends are going up although many consider Bitcoin a bubble and a system built on nothing.”The reason to careFor true believers though, Blockchain and its offshoots offer the purest form of currency.Gutterman said, “Most applications of blockchain technology beyond the sending and storage of money you hear about are being built on the Ethereum platform, and most of the time people say ‘blockchain’ what they really mean is “Ethereum.’“The reason to care is that Ethereum is changing how control and power work in our world, and putting the user back in charge of his or her data and identity, reputation, assets, and experience of using internet tools and applications. Instead of decisions being made by powerful groups of people in back rooms, decisions on open-source blockchain software are made transparently.Ӊ€œThe rules of the game are visible to everyone equally,” Gutterman added. “Ethereum is the substrate upon which a world can be built that is more transparen t, efficient, and just.”

The number of cheaters using dating apps and sites right now is shocking

The number of cheaters using dating apps and sites right now is shocking The number of cheaters using dating apps and sites right now is shocking Love is dead. Or at least a lot of people seem to think so.33% of Americans feel that online dating has supposedly “killed romance,” according to research by  YouGov Omnibus. And they may be onto something, based on some of the people using these services.YouGov found that 17% of people who are currently date-cruising on apps or websites are there partly to cheat on their significant others. That’s more than one in six. Statistically, if you swipe six times, one of those potential matches is going to be a cheater.Woof. That’s a lot to take in. It truly is a jungle out there. But wait, there’s more.Credit: YouGov7% of people who have ever used dating apps or sites did so to cheat. And particularly pervasive cheaters include millennials, parents of children under 18, and married people. So much for “forever.”Casual sex is another popular reason for using such online tools. 33% of men say it was one of the reasons they logged on. And then 19% of users are on there to make p latonic connections, so that’s strange.Maybe all of these things are why online dating suffers from such a bad rep. Among Americans, “dangerous” is the word most associated with apps and websites. Other words include “interesting,” “convenient” and “fun.”Credit: YouGovAmong the 32% of Americans who have used an app or website to date, 17% find them to be “romantic.” But among people who have not turned to the online space for love, that number plummets to 4%.And here’s the real kicker: 39% of Americans say online dating is “for people who can’t meet romantic partners offline or in-person,” but 47% have met a partner or know someone who has via a dating app, YouGov found. So either we’re all hypocrites, or we have horrible self-esteem and really don’t like our friends. Either way, here’s the summary: The Internet has murdered romance, you’re probably swiping right on a cheater, and men really, really want to get lucky.

The Seven Habits of Effective Intrapreneurs

The Seven Habits of Effective Intrapreneurs The Seven Habits of Effective Intrapreneurs As an inventor I have witnessed a fairly distinctive pattern of intrapreneurship within my own multi-national corporation (EMC). The employees that are the most successful at advancing their ideas through the corporate maze tend to operate using a fairly well-defined rhythm. The chart below breaks down this rhythm into a set of discrete steps that can be learned and practiced by creative employees world-wide.   Although this diagram is cyclical, intrapreneurs-in-training cannot simply jump on at any given point in the cycle. It is imperative that their very first step be the practice and discipline of productivity. Intrapreneurs by their very nature are productive; they know how to produce new products or services based on their own ideas. What separates an intrapreneur from the many productive employees that can be found in any corporation? The answer is that they continue to take initiative beyond their required duties. Over the course of the next several weeks this blog will dive into these seven steps in detail. Many of these steps are already described in the book Innovate with Influence. Please consider subscribing to this blog to learn more about how you can “Innovate With Influence” at your own place of employment. How Your Seemingly Random Interests Can Actually Benefit Your Career

How Your Seemingly Random Interests Can Actually Benefit Your Career How Your Seemingly Random Interests Can Actually Benefit Your Career I keep busy overseeing an insurance agency, but my interests arent confined to the skills and topics related to my industry. Over the course of my career, I have realized that all of my seemingly unrelated interests and habits - from collecting antique hood ornaments to studying 18th-century explorer Captain Cook to managing a company - complement one another to make me a more powerful, well-rounded, and overall content executive. The concept that creative outlets improve work performance applies across industries and hobbies. A survey from San Francisco State University found that workers who pursued creative activities outside of work - from writing novels to playing video games - brought more innovative thinking and positive habits to the office. Dedication to mastering a pursuit thats seemingly unrelated to ones job can spur self-discovery that benefits career advancement. In other words, pursuing personal passions makes you a stronger candidate for the professional role you want. Connections Between Work and Play Among my interests, I have long been fascinated with copper pots, the kind used for hundreds of years to create jellies, jams, and candies. Recently, I found in Europe the largest copper pot I had ever seen. Naturally, I had to have it. The research I did to discover the copper pot, evaluate its value, negotiate a price, and transport it was similar to the process I use for many work projects, such as studying business competitors. Id had some due diligence practice that helped me secure the pot, and the research and negotiations I undertook to complete the purchase gave me practice that translated to negotiating value at work. Every job seeker has heard that continuous learning makes you a more appealing candidate, but have you ever thought about your hobbies as learning opportunities? Regardless of whether you realize it as you pursue your avocation, dedicating free time to a non-work passion project can mold you into a better potential hire. Here are some career benefits you may reap while practicing your pastimes: 1. Sharpened Smarts Hobbies not only help us expand our vocabulary and general knowledge, but they also help us form neural connections essential to learning new information. Hobbies that require outside reading, for example, improve vocabulary and overall brain activity. Additionally, performing research on your own helps you grow accustomed to doing due diligence before making decisions. 2. Enhanced Problem-Solving Embracing your extracurricular interests can help you develop skills which help you find answers to puzzling situations you encounter on the job. A study in the Journal of Occupational and Organizational Psychology found that embracing creative hobbies led to more creative problem-solving at work. The curiosity that propels you to pursue your hobbies will also help you devise creative solutions at work. 3. Defined Goals Passion underlies every hobby and pushes you to get in touch with the interests and motivations that drive you. Embracing that passion helps you wake up each morning and take a different approach to reach your goals for the day. Playing video games  is one of the most common hobbies among the younger working generation. Research suggests that video games can help players build workplace skills by encouraging them to flex their mental muscles to achieve predefined goals. Passionately exploring ways to reach goals in your personal life means youll feel more practiced and prepared when faced with a difficult problem at the office. 4. Purposeful Behavior Generations of kids received early education from the characters of Sesame Street, showing us how valuable TV could be in helping us learn and retain information. When I watch television, its with purpose. I turn to Discovery or the History Channel to glean new information that I can often apply to my work life as well. Of course, all work and no play can be dull, and a good Will Ferrell flick is worth a stress-relieving laugh occasionally. I purposefully choose viewing options that help me sharpen my mind, recharge my batteries, and prepare myself for my next round of work. - Feel like your hobbies get in the way of your career? Rethink your perspective. When people accuse me of spending too much time tending to my collections, I explain that Im merely polishing my credentials. Avoiding Unnecessary Repetition in Your Cover Letter

Avoiding Unnecessary Repetition in Your Cover Letter Avoiding Unnecessary Repetition in Your Cover Letter Too often, cover letters bring nothing new or relevant to the table. In fact, according to career expert J.T. O’Donnell, half of recruiters  don’t even read them! When [recruiters]  open a cover letter, if they skim it and see its just a repetition of what is already in the resume, they skip reading it, ODonnell warns. So how can you make sure your letter doesn’t end up being overlooked? Read on for Grammarly’s top strategies on writing a cover letter that gets results! Resume Repetition Many job seekers simply use their cover letters to rehash the information included in their resumes, but that’s a mistake that can hurt your chances of getting an interview. Career coach Alexandra Sleator points out that the purpose of a cover letter is to provide context for your application. It’s an interpretation of the information you share in your resume. What it isn’t is a repetition, Sleator says. Read over your cover letter and ask yourself if it offers any new insights and information beyond the factual details found in your resume. If the answer is no, then it’s time to reconsider your approach. Is There an Echo in Here? While your cover letter is all about you, avoid making too many statements that begin with I. Veteran resume-writer Lee Tonge warns against overusing the pronoun: “While you want to market your skills and abilities to the prospective employer, starting every single sentence with ‘I can do…’, ‘I have done…’ etc., is tedious to read and is not effective. You need to add interest to the letter by writing in a way that avoids repetition.” You should also scan your cover letter for any words or phrases that pop up more than once. Check out this list of redundant phrases to watch out for and if you find any in your cover letter, reach for the delete key! Time (and Space) Is Money Considering that a typical cover letter is a single page with just 3-5  brief paragraphs of text, you need to make the most of your limited space. You should also keep in mind that recruiters and hiring managers won’t spend more than a minute or two scanning your letter and resume, so keep things short. Don’t bury the lede with rambling sentences or redundant language. For example, if you feel that one of your greatest assets is your punctuality, don’t waste time by reiterating your timeliness, promptness, and uncanny ability to meet deadlines. Make your point once and move on. Tell Me Something I Don’t Know Avoid the standard opening, I am writing to express my interest in position X. The recruiter already knows that you’re apply to the job that’s why you sent in a resume and cover letter, after all. Instead of telling the reader something they  already know, open with a memorable hook. As Jenny Treanor writes for LiveCareer, “Like all effective writing, a great cover letter tells a story but it’s a short story.”Master the art of closing deals and making placements. Investing in a Career Upgrade

Investing in a Career Upgrade Investing in a Career Upgrade Kitty Koenig put $100 into a ticket to a charity event and devoted time to a volunteer opportunity that followed. The SalesLadder member said the investment paid off many times over. It’s hard to part with money when you’re not making any. Many job seekers face the decision to put up money to support their job searches at the time when they can least afford to part with it. Even if it might lead to you to find a job, expenses for things like a new interview suit, subscriptions to a job board, membership fees to industry groups and travel to job interviews are hard to take. It can be hard to call it anything more than a gamble.Kitty Koenig decided to call it an investment. When a contact suggested she spend $100 to attend a charity function that might be good for her career, she decided it was yet another investment in the job search. When the couple she met at the charity event asked her to volunteer her time to their organization, she decided to call it an investment. And when the y later asked her to travel to Cuba - for free - she decided it was an investment.Natural networkerKoenig, of New Haven, Conn., has built her career on networking. She has reinvented her personal brand several times thanks to opportunities she found through her professional network. Her latest incarnation was as the owner of a planning business for international events. The position afforded her access to C-level executives and philanthropic fund raisers, whom she hoped would help her find a position as an executive assistant when the recession depressed her events business.“I needed something to take the pressure off,” she said. “I wanted an income I could count on until the event planning could come back.”She was looking for an opportunity that would allow her to take the skills that had made her a successful independent businessperson - event planning, travel services, fluent in several languages - and use them in another sector. Koenig had been working with high-level clients and was skeptical of typical job-search channels. With an eclectic mix of skills and experience, she knew she would need to get herself in front of people so they could get to know her and understand her value.I wasn’t going to send 5,000 resumes to nowhere,” Koenig said. “I needed to meet people, to let them know who I was.”So the SalesLadder member did what she does best: networking. “It’s the way everything fabulous happens.”Philanthropy or opportunity? When Koenig attended a charity event her in Connecticut, she was introduced to someone who took an interest in her background and suggested she meet a contact of theirs in New York, who was connected to the fine -art collectors and traders. It was two degrees of separation, but she reached out to the art collector, who invited her to yet another charity event, this time in New York. The ticket for the dinner cost $100. It felt a little steep for Koenig, who was still running the event-planning business on a re duced income. But Koenig decided it was worth it to expand her network. The people who were hosting the event, an exhibit on bookmakers from Cuba, run a foundation that supports Cuban artists. And it was there that she met one-half of the husband-and-wife team who run American Friends of the Ludwig Foundation, a group that facilitates cultural exchanges in the arts between Cuba and the United States. That meeting, now four degrees of separation from the friend who encouraged her to attend the original charity event, led to a conversation over lunch and then an invitation to come back to New York to talk to the people at the foundation about what their needs were and what Koenig might be able to provide.Koenig offered to assist, and the organization asked her to prepare an upcoming tour to Cuba. Koenig was a volunteer at this point. The Ludwig Foundation agreed to pay her expenses, but she’d have to volunteer her own time. Koenig decided it was another investment in her network : She would demonstrate her planning skills to the Ludwig organization.“The foundation didn’t care about my resume, they wanted to see what I could do,” Koenig said. “It was my people-to-people skills, my cultural skills that they needed to see. I was representing them, and it was important that they know it would be the same way they would do it.”Time and money well spentGiving away your work isn’t always smart, Koenig said, but in this case, her efforts paid off in a big way. “It didn’t cost me anything except time; and how much time do you spend in a job search? That small amount time was worth it a hundred times over.”Koenig is now doing work for the Foundation on a month-to-month basis, coordinating trips to Cuba. She has incorporated this work into her event-planning business. “And it’s now part of my client base,” she said. Not bad for a $100 investment.Taking this tack costs money, to be sure. “When my friend suggested I go to the charity event, I told h er, ‘This is money I don’t want to spend.’ She said, ‘Do it, it will come back tenfold.’ She was 100 percent right. You have to invest something to get something back.“I hadn’t thought of looking at charity events as business opportunities before,” she continued. “But they are terrific business opportunities. People who attend them often have money to spend and have opportunities to offer. It’s taking networking to a higher level.”Her advice to job seekers looking for new opportunities: ” Network like crazy ” and look outside the box for unique events that might be your next networking win. “Networking events (and job fairs) are full of other people who don’t have jobs,” she said. “I would rather talk to people who are employed and might have something I can help them with.”

The death of the character-building teen summer job

The death of the character-building teen summer job The death of the character-building teen summer job Remember your first summer job when you were a teenager? Perhaps it was scooping ice cream, or doing back-breaking yard work, or washing dishes at Wendy’s all summer long (just for an example.) As your parents told you, it taught you the meaning of work.Well, that’s all gone by the wayside. Only a third (34.6%) of teenagers had a summer job last year, according to Pew Research Center’s latest analysis of federal employment data. Two decades ago, about 50% of American teenagers worked at least part of their summer vacation. But since 2000, that number has gone steadily downhill, even with some recovery in jobs since the Great Recession ended.Follow Ladders on Flipboard!Follow Ladders’ magazines on Flipboard covering Happiness, Productivity, Job Satisfaction, Neuroscience, and more! There are some trends within the trend: white teenagers are more likely than nonwhite teens to be employed during the summer. Last summer, says Pew, the summer employment rate for 16-to-19-year-old wh ites was 37.5%, versus 28.9% for Hispanics, and 25.8% for African-Americans.Ultimately, the decline of the teen summer job is a “specific instance of a broader long-term decline in overall youth employment, a trend that’s also been observed in other advanced economies.”There are a variety of theories why: fewer low-skill, entry-level jobs available than in past decades, schools going longer into the summer, more students enrolled in summer classes, more students doing volunteer or types of programs that will look good on their resume come college-application time, and more students participating in unpaid internships. With more pressure to get a jump on college, that leaves less time to jump out of bed early and get yourself to that summer job.
